After fully expanding its new domain name registry service in the U.S. last month, Google is now selling registrations for web addresses using the .HOW domain.

Unlike earlier Top Level Domains (TLDs) like .com and .gov that are controlled by governments and non-governmental organizations, companies like Google have purchased control of hundreds of new TLDs. (List of TLDs)

Google is positioning “.HOW” as the address for how-to or instructional websites. In fact, in the introductory message on the “Get.How” website, Google refers to websites using the domain as “a .How”and promotes registering a domain with the question,”What will you teach on your .HOW?

“We believe .HOW can become an intuitive way for creators and consumers to share, identify and discover some of the best learning content on the web,” Google said in announcing availability of the new TLD.

Pricing

Unlike traditional TLDs, the pricing of what are being called “premium” domains are market-based. For example, a quick look at prices for .HOW domains on Name.com revealed annual fees ranging from $125 to $685. (Quite a bit higher than the 99¢ specials currently running for .com addresses on some registry services.)

SmallBusiness.HOW

We couldn’t resist. As we’re working on a new project that involves various categories of how-tos and instructional content, we decided to create our own .HOW — We’ll be rolling it out later this year.
