Twitter today announced it is testing an in tweet Buy Button that can generate an ecommerce transaction directly from the tweet. “In our test, an entire purchase can be completed in just a few taps,” the company said. “After tapping the “Buy” button, you will get additional product details and be prompted to enter your shipping and payment information. Once that’s entered and confirmed, your order information is sent to the merchant for delivery.”

This isn’t the first attempt at in-Tweet commerce, however. Companies like Amazon have created their own ways of selling products via Twitter using a hashtag.

Currently, Twitter’s buy button test is limited to a few brands and music acts. Typically, such features roll out to the rest of us only after all of the technical kinks and business model issues are worked out. (For example, will the buy button be sold as an advertising feature or will Twitter seek a commission on items sold, or a hybrid of both.)

Stay tuned.
