A subcontract is a contract that assigns part of an existing contract to a different party. For example, if a construction company has the contract to build a home, they are called the contractor, or sometimes, the "prime contractor." They, in turn, will "subcontract" work to electricians, plumbers and others, who are called "subcontractors."
