For small businesses, the term web application typcially refers to a type of business software that is accessed via a web browser over the internet. As access to the web has become more ubiqitous and robust, web-based applications have been developed for a wide array of business uses and processes. Such applications are becoming alternatives to business software that runs on the users' PC or Mac hard drive. Rather than through the sale of a license for such desktop software, web applications typically are marketed as a monthly or yearly fee or subscription for use of the application. Some applications are even available for no cost, such as the office-oriented software Google offers called Google Docs. Another term for this type of arrangement is software as a service, or SaaS.
