For the first time ever, the company that predicts the next color to fill in the blank, “(               )  is the new black,” has named two colors—not one—as the “2016 Color of the Year.” So, here they are: “Serenity and Rose Quartz are the new black.”

What is the “Color of the Year”?

Each year, a “color of the year” is selected by Pantone, the provider of professional color standards for the design industries. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, play styles and socio-economic conditions.

Why Serenity and Rose Quartz?

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the calming colors are a response to “consumers seek[ing] mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to the stress of modern day lives.”

“Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times. Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.”
