The U.S. Census Bureau today reported (PDF) that household income increased 5.2 percent between 2014 and 2015. This is the first annual increase in median household income since 2007. (The financial meltdown occurred in 2008, followed by the “great recession” and slower-than-usual recovery.)

Employment

+2.4 million | The increase in full-time, year round employees between 2014 and 2015.

Poverty

-1.2 percentage points | Decrease in official poverty rate between 2014 and 2015.

-3.5 million | The reduction of people in poverty between 2014 and 2015.

Median household income

For most demographic groups, the 2015 income estimates were statistically higher than the 2014 estimates. For American families, household incomes rose strongly in 2015, breaking a yearslong pattern of income stagnation.

+5.2% | Increase in median household income in 2015 (to $56,500)

The median household income is still 1.6 percent lower than in 2007, before the recession.
