In another experiment with bricks and mortar retailing, Amazon announced today that it is launching five fully-staffed “Instant Pickup” locations on university campuses. The service provides a limited selection of “daily essentials” for Prime members and Prime Student members, available for pickup in two minutes or less.

Using the Amazon App, customers can order and receive items from a self-service locker. Typically, the pickup locations are in centrally located facilities like student centers.

The items stocked for pickup include food, cold drinks, personal care items, technology essentials and Amazon devices like the Echo.

The first five instant pickup locations will be on campuses in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Atlanta
  • Berkeley, Calif.
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • College Park, Md.

In the past, we’ve shared other Amazon “pickup” concepts including one that would have used former RadioShack locations and another that (pre Whole Food acquisition) was a drive-through food store concept.
